Women with Power? You're Damn Right

Game of Thrones is by far one of the most powerful shows that many people around the world enjoy watching and reading. I know I am definitely one of them. One powerful view that has really stuck out to me is the possession of power that women take on. That is right I said it, WOMEN! That is a sight that is remarkable to see very early on in Game of Thrones because that is not something you seem to see often. Women that obtain power is significant in the show really demonstrates their level of intelligence. Normally, men usually have most of the possession of power and it is rare for women to hold any, but in Game of Thrones, men, you better watch out.
One of the first characters early on, Cersei Lannister, is one of the first women that comes into my eyes who obtain power fairly quickly and will do whatever means necessary in order to have any power. Early on the in the show, she already has enough power by being the queen of Westeros. I mean come on, what more power could she want right? Well she for sure wants to have loads of power. When she is first introduced into the show, she is already the Queen of Westeros along side with her husband, King Robert Baratheon. With this power that she has, she has gained most of it from her husband, which many women in the show gain from their husbands, if not they do so independently. That particular someone we will get to later on.
Anyways back to Cersei. Ashely Boucher gives a great explanation on how Cersei gets her power and how she uses it to the best to her extent. One of the easiest ways that we see the power that she has is by the way she is dressed when she first in introduced. You can easily tell with the big furry jacket and the jewel-toned dressed that she is living her best life. Or at least I would hope she is. Another way that she demonstrates her power alongside with her clothes is when the feast is taken place in Winterfell when her and King Baratheon are there. At the feast, most everyone is dressed alike, but not the Queen. She decided to go all out for this feast. She is displayed at the feast for what it seems to be like the most expensive outfit amongst all the people there. She is clearly trying to show off and show the people of Winterfell how much power she has over them and she is not afraid to present it either.
Another way that Cerci demonstrates her dominance over the series is the way she is not afraid to confront anyone or let anyone scare her. Ashely Boucher once again gives a great explanation of this when Cersei is confronted by Ned Stark.  When Cersei is confronted about sexual affair with her twin bother Jaime, she showed no fear towards the act. From what was presented to me, she pretty much told Ned Stark to tell the King about the affair. She was not terrified at all of what could happen from it. She said one of the important quotes that I personally think is one of the most important quotes said in Game of Thrones: “When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die.” She once again is reiterating that you need to do whatever it takes in order to have power. She for sure isn’t afraid to do it either. The only question that I see with this is how long she will actually keep this power of hers. Now, her son is the new King and she can only use his power along with hers to an extent as she feels like she has a little bit of competition for power. That person she is currently competing with for that power is the one in King’s Landing is Margaery Tyrell.

Margaery was first introduced to her full feminine power when she was married to King Joffrey Baratheon, which was then made into a huge threat to Cersei Lannister. This just once again shows how women are gaining power from men and it better suits them to gaining their power quicker. Before she even gained this power of now becoming queen, Fandom explains how she first got her power and on her thoughts of becoming a queen, or should I say THE QUEEN. One quote that really brought my attention that she said when she was first introduces it, she stated: “I do not want to be a Queen, I want to be the Queen.” This to me portrayed that she might be a queen once again later on as things progressed. Not only does this marriage she has with King Renly Baratheon make her a queen, she implies on producing an heir with him so that their power can remain in their hands. Pretty smart if you ask me, right? I mean no one wants to lose their power once they have it. Am I right or am I right? Well, this way she can also keep her power and not lose it later. Once the tragic death of her husband came about, she knew that she had just lost her power and must once again recapture it. Margaery quickly found herself a new king she could marry and that was to King Joffrey Baratheon. I swear she could have done sooo much better. Anyways, she quickly regains that power she once had lost and she kind of imposes as a threat over Cersei over this power. She can easily manipulate King Joffrey which only makes things easier for her and the power he has can also now be under her control as well. In the scene where Margaery is talking to King Joffrey about greeting the crowd outside, the king seems quite scared. What a baby right? Who could possibly be afraid of greeting people? Margaery convinces him to greet the crowd and the crowd joyfully cheers them on. This is something that Cersei clearly does not like as not even she could manipulate King Joffrey. Not only can women gain power from men, but in this scene, you can also see that women can take away power from other women as well.
Now on to the character that I think has been really independent so far and is mainly reliant on herself, Daenerys Targaryen, the mother of the dragons. Thus far, Dany is the women in Game of Thrones who I believe has the most power out of all of them and I even think she has more power than the men do as well. With her start as well as many others, she too obtained her beginning power from a man, Khal Drogo. What she did not know is that she would soon have power that she never even know she was going to have. Veronica Walsingham gives a thorough explanation on how Dany gains her power and how well she uses it. When we first heard of her announcement, she was being traded to Khal Drogo in order receive assistance on an attack on Westeros. At first, Dany did not know how to react to the marriage towards Khal Drogo and was easily taken advantage by him. She knew that she had to put an end to this if she actually wanted this to work her herself just as much as Khal Drogo did. On an erotic night they were about to have, instead of Khal Drogo being the one who was dominant, Dany decided it was her time to take action and to take control. Although this is probably not what she wanted at the time, she knew she could not be taken advantage of and had to make some changes if this was going to continue. Veronica Walsingham also acknowledges how quickly Dany manipulations skills are like no other. Dany needed an army quick but knew her best bet of getting an army quickly was from Kraznys. Before she could have her army of Unsullied, she needed to make an exchange with Kraznys in order for her wish of her army to come true. She offers to trade one of her dragons for the army. I mean, are you serious right now? Do you really think she was just going to give up one of her three dragons just like that?  Little did Kraznys know with all the insults he was throwing at her, she understood every word. One the trade was made, she quickly had full control of the Unsullied. As far as Kraznys, yeah, he really messed up bad. Once he found out that she could speak the same language as he could, he knew he was done for. The way she quickly obtained this power with a new army is something remarkable and is something I would have never saw coming. She gave the Unsullied the option to leave and to not be part of the army, but they all choose to stay by her side. I mean, if I were them, I don’t think I would have wanted to even guess what could have happened if I did not choose to be on her side. I would have probably ended up like poor Kraznys.
In Game of Thrones, you can see how women obtain their power and how they manage to use it to their advantage. Not only do they have their own power, I sometimes think they have more power than men do and can use that against many of them. These are only a few characters who have really revealed the amount of power they have. I would not be surprised if more female characters like Arya and Sansa Stark managed to gain a sense of feminine power of their own to join the rest of these women.

  1. I would agree with the fact that women continue to have a growing dominance in the Game of Thrones series. The women kind of have to be sneakier and smarter with how they go about obtaining their power like Margaery did. Not all people are able to have three dragons flying around them like Danny does. I feel as if each woman within the series has their own power in each of their own way. The example of Margaery having to marry Joffrey in order to become queen was something I am sure she thought about time and time again before she actually put her plan into action.

  2. There is one thing that I can’t help but question. Is Dany powerful just because of her dragons?

    1. I feel like with Dany having her Dragons, it gives her a great sense of power rather than other characters. Without the dragons, I don’t think she would have as much power and she does with them. Honestly, I don’t think she would have any power at all.

    2. I agree,I think that without Dany's Dragons she would have not been able to conquer cities like she has. I don't even think she would have been able to receive help from Qarth if she didn't have her dragons. They turned her away in the beginning and it wasn't until she reminded them and assured them that she had three dragons that one of the thirteen let her come in.

  3. I believe it was significant that Dany started out being a loved character and Cersei being hated because there would be quite a flip at the end of season two. They wanted an emphasis on how people are able to change, whether it being good or bad.
Both of these females showed power, Cersei through her sexuality and ultimately Dany through her dragons. Additionally, I thought it was very insightful to look at how the loss of a husband affected both of these characters. Dany became very power hungry while Cersei was trying to have some type of control over her son. Thus far, both of these women are indirectly compared to each other which makes everything more interesting.

  4. I did not think about the clothes that she wears and how they represent her power, I only saw them as a way to show off her great wealth, I am glad that you have brought this point up because it adds to the fact that in the beginning Cersei had everything she could ever want, unlike some other female characters in the series. I also agree with your statement speaking on the fact that women can take power away from each other and we clearly see that when Cersei and Margaery meet. I am interested to see how they will continue to come at each other throughout the series especially now that Joffrey is dead. Do you think that they will continue to battle for power?

    1. At first I did not think of the clothes either! After I did some more research I found out that it kinda played a huge role.
