Back Off My Girl Sansa
Back Off My Girl Sansa
In Game of Thrones, there are so many rules and expectations and so many people are slaughtered or even decapitated for “doing wrong,” but there is so much hypocrisy it is insane to me how some people are still alive and have their heads attached to their bodies. When I first began to read about Sansa, I did not hate her, I mean she did get a bit annoying and WOW she did not defend her sister at all which is what I feel is the only reason some fans are hating on her, but I knew that she was only doing what she was raised to do. At one point I was disliking Arya because of what she was putting her sister through. I was like come on dude, you’re driving your sister insane and my girl is only trying to help you out. What pisses me off the most about the situation with Arya and Sansa is that Sansa is just trying to do the right thing and follow the rules of society because Ned and Catelyn never told her otherwise, and everyone seems to shame her for it. Rhiannon gave a quote in her article, “She believes in everything that her parents and her septa have taught her.” How are you going to shame someone for doing exactly what you asked them to do and learned? Throughout her whole life she saw the expectations needed to be met to be a princess and there was nothing getting in her way of doing that. Sansa learned all of these standards from her family and speaking about her family, Sansa is very similar to Ned in most ways; they are wanting to do the right thing and stick to the norm, but in this society things do not seem to turn out like that. In this story line, Ned seems to be very liked and respected, you know until they straight took his head off, but that was only because Joffrey is a maniac and wants to be petty and seem cool to everyone. LARGE AND IN CHARGE BUDDY. Anyways, in my opinion Ned wanted to follow along with King Robert’s wishes and I was actually very surprised because he knew about all the incest going on. To tie this into Sansa, I want to talk about how she wanted to follow the queen’s wishes and wanted to impress her and seem very formal to make a good first impression. These two seemed to put themselves in more danger when they were doing what society wanted them to do, so does that mean in order to survive you need to be a rule breaker? This can come back to Arya and how she has been surviving through the absolute worst even though she does not fit the stereotype of typical woman in this time.
As stated by Rebecca Jones, Sansa was all about the fairy tell ending. This girl was a princess to the T, she had these expectations for her happy ending just like in all the princess movies. This girl just wanted a man to save her and be her hero, but it all ended completely opposite because Joffrey was just a wild immature little boy who did not know how to control his anger. What also really pissed me off was how much she loved Joffrey, OH MY GOSH, okay I didn’t hate her like most of my classmates did, but when I realized how psychotic Joffrey was I was really questioning how this girl could be so in love with a Lannister. Okay that family is already messed up enough like if she only knew what kind of things were going on, I wonder if she would even think twice about being with this little boy. I can however relate to Sansa’s situation because ever since I was a little girl, I wanted a man to come sweep me off my feet and be my protection, but girl it is definitely not going to be like that unless you are Cinderella or rich honestly but it does not seem like that will happen for me anytime soon, so tragic for me.
I want to go into how the readers thought about how Sansa Diana Marques stated that women put aside their woman roles to accepted by the guys just like Brienne had to do and this can include Arya as well, but it only emphasizes how it seems a bit weird for women to do things like this. Sansa followed the way that women were viewed in societies and the audience thought there was something wrong with HER? Nah, you guys got it wrong because back then, this is how things were meant to me and it was the norm for young girls to want to marry a guy and fall in love. Sansa decides to stick to the roles that a woman should have, to be married to a king, learn how to sew and any other attributes that a woman in that time should have. I almost think that people enjoyed bashing her because Arya seemed like such a bad ass and could do what a man could do and she was so young. Nowadays people are all for woman doing anything that a man can do because that shows POWER! That’s why I feel like Sansa was so hated, she was too uptight and wanted to be want almost seemed to be the perfect woman that society claims to want.
Sansa knows how to make the best of this and she is absolutely killing it because she is seen as the damsel in distress. Rhiannon argued, “ She learns how to play the game. She wears her courtesy for her armor, and she listens, and she adapts, and she keeps her cards close to her chest.” I applaud Rhiannon because I totally agree with what she was saying in her article. At some points she knows that she can use her formality and properness for her own good.
Okay, I will back off your girl Sansa. But first, a couple questions on why? How can you think she is a good character even though she doesn’t even stand up for her sister? How can someone not see the whole picture that Joffery is a terrible human until he takes off your own father’s head? Yes, Sansa has been through a lot. Yes, she is a female who believes in true love. No, she is not a good person just because she does a couple things right AFTER the fact the BOY she thought she loved killed her father. She does not care about anyone but herself.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I guess I can see where you are coming from, kinda not really, but don't you think Arya was a bit annoying? Sansa was just trying to do what her parents and the queen wanted her to do, Arya was just rebelling and enjoyed pissing off her sister because they were both so different. Also, when Sansa wanted Joffrey, it was waayyy before he chopped her father's head off and before we knew he was psychotic. Do you really still think that she was an awful human and was just caring about herself after reality hit her in the face?!?!
DeleteOkay, I think reality hit her in the face way before her quote on quote “love” took her fathers head. I think that she was in her own bubble of what life is like even though there was so much going on around her that she ignored. Not only did she ignore everything going on around her, so ignored what it is like to be a big sister. I actually applaud Arya for rebelling, at least she was doing something she believed in. When did Sansa do that?
DeleteUhhhh I think that Sansa stood up for what she believed in when she took that slap in the face like a champ and didn't bawl her eyes out!! Or when she was about to shove that kid off the bridge, or how she somehow stays with these awful people just to keep her other family safe!!!
DeleteMy argument is where was she before this when Arya needed her. Where is her concern for Arya?
DeleteSansa is a child within a time period where fairytales and gullible children exist, and it is not Sansa’s fault. Lili the way you progressed into liking Sansa was the same for me. She was wayyy too annoying for a normal character and I did not like that. By the time I have grown to like her, all my hatred went out of the window. Lili when you said that Sansa gets blamed for doing what her parents taught her, that struck a nerve in me. And that backup quote, superb. Once you think about it, how and why do we hate a person who is doing exactly what they are taught? I guess once you think about it, viewers and readers want someone who isn’t afraid to fight back. Sansa just didn’t possess that fighting strength at the time. I do not believe that it took her father's head to realize that the Lannister's were horrible people. I believed that she noticed it earlier and for her protection, she acted as if she did not notice. Yeah Lili I totally see how she is and will forever be a badass.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I'm saying!! The only reason they liked Arya so much better than Sansa was because in today's society, women who stand up for themselves and stray away from their gender norms are praised (which I also think is super awesome) but I think that viewers need to take into account the TIME PERIOD that they are in because it was totally okay for girls to be the way Sansa was and they were expected to be that way so yes I also agree that if she were to fight back and look powerful she would be a bit more liked. I guess I never really thought about her realizing the Lannisters were awful before they took her father's head off because Joffrey was a straight up psycho.
DeleteWhile reading your post I could really tell how upset you were with the class, and I get why. I personally did not like her because of how she treated her sister, but I also don't think her sister is that likable as well. Like you said Sansa is prissy and a girly girl, but people shouldn't judge her for it. It's like judging someone for their color of their skin (although that stills happen). I get that this is all she knows but I feel like she does not allow herself to learn that she does not have to marry someone that is a psychopath especially a Lannister.
ReplyDeleteYea I was pretty upset with the class because everyone was just bashing her and I just did not see why they were so mad about this little girl who thought she was doing the right thing! Also, at that point I also did not really like her sister Arya because she was just annoying and did not want to listen to anyone and be her own person (which at this time was just not was girls were supposed to do, but then again we have to think about the time period). Another thing about Sansa doing what she was taught to do, maybe she did not allow herself to learn new things because she was scared about what would happen in that time, I mean come on, Joffrey chopped off her dad's head and she felt like all she could do was just sit there and be pretty. Let's be honest, if she tried to do something different then there goes another character we wanted to keep on the show.
DeleteYou are absolutely right about Sansa being scared to learn new things. I honestly did not think about her dying if she did try to learn new things.
DeleteI cannot agree that I loved Sansa Stark from the beginning. From the start I thought of Sansa exactly as you described her at the beginning of your post, a prissy girly girl, and not in a good way either. Over time though my opinions of her changed and now I definitely do not think she deserved all the hate she got, considering every negative thing that has been thrown her way in her life. So I definitely agree, everyone should back off of Sansa now.
ReplyDeleteIf she was trying to do the right thing in this time period, why did she not stand up for her family name? Why did she continue to lie time and time again? I for sure would not want to back up a liar who will not defend my family name.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this post I agree completely! I know for a fact if I was in this time period my attitude would've had me long gone before anything.
