Dany Deserved better!

WHY DID YOU HAVE TO DO DANY SO DIRTY?
In the thrilling series of Games of Thrones, we follow a multitude of characters, but one being in particular Daenerys Targaryen. Dany character evolution from a girl with nothing to a girl with the world at her hands. One might say Dany imbodies a conqueror because of all the places and people she has ruled in the 8 seasons of Games of Thrones. Did the writers of Games of Thrones give us an insight to Dany’s conqueror nature or was it just a last-minute decision to make her “The Mad Queen.” Dany was a powerful character and seeing her fight for everything she has makes me believe she deserved the Iron Throne.
Image result for Dany watching them kill her brother          When reviewing the Games of Thrones 8 season you will see how Dany will gain her power. I think the first place that you see the “Power of the Dragon” is when she watches her brother Viserys death and she doesn’t flinch when her husband pours hot gold on his head. Dany explains that is what her brother deserved because he was a horrible person. She says with a really emotionalist look “He’s no Dragon. Fire can’t kill a dragon” because by this point, she has realized she is the real dragon. Some say this is the first place you will see the “long simmering madness” but what I see is a girl finally becoming free and figuring out that she is the one that can and will regain her family’s throne (Ahlgrim). I think that is really important part of Dany’s story arch because she is portrayed as this innocent, naïve girl who is a ticketing item for her brother to get what he wants. In my opinion Viserys is more like the Mad King than Dany has ever been.

Another places some fans believe that the Mad Queen storyline was in place was when she saves Mirri Maz Duur from being raped by her husband’s men. Dany really thought she help her but in truth she was saving her from being raped again. The point where Dany saw the change in the women was when she betrayed her and basically killed Drogo (Ahlgrim). Dany took it upon herself to try to bring Drogo back but in turn Mirri Maz Duur took her sons life instead. Dany was now really alone and angry wouldn’t you be as well? of course it was your family. People weren’t mad when she burned her at the stake because they believed she was getting justice. I did and I don’t think this was hint at her being crazy or mad. Dany went through a tremendous lost that really put her on the path to be a ruler and even make her more determined to get to Westeros. I think it really shows Dany’s strength to get up and keep pushing to get home because she no longer has anyone. This also opened up the place for her dragons to be introduce which is another part that shows how alone Dany was. She named the dragons after her brother, her son and her other brother which are the people who were taken from her.

I think season 8 is where Daenerys character got the blunt to all of the ciaos in Westeros and she was just trying to heal a land but in turn she was put in the midst of an all-out war where there is no winner. Daenerys has conquered worlds beyond the sea and have gain trustworthy followers. Yes, Dany has had to do some not so great things to her so-called friends who have betrayed her, but she stayed true to her word "I'm here to free the world from tyrants. That is my destiny. And I will serve it, no matter the cost ( Ahlgrim).” A huge argument is that within this season is that Dany has created feeling for Jon Snow that are not return which is why she goes mad (Zuckerman).
Thus, Dany turns into a mess of stereotypes. She's the spurned lover, enraged that the man she adores will not reciprocate her affection; she's the hysterical woman unfit to rule because she lets her emotions get the better of her; she's the Mad Queen. And she's evil. Really fucking evil. Benioff and Weiss make a point of showing the women and children she massacres, gruesomely burned alive in the narrow streets of King's Landing, after the opposing forces had thrown down their swords(Zuckerman).”

I don’t believe that is the reason why she goes mad. Dany has had many lovers no one every including Jon could feel that void she has. I believe the madness that everyone is talking comes from the loss of her dragon Viserion with the white walkers then the death of her other dragon Rhaegal in battle against the Lannister and then killing of the only person (I believe) Dany really cared about Missandei. Cersei was the true mad queen because of the horrible things she not only did to the Stark family but to Dany as well. I wished that Daenerys had held her composure and not burned the whole city of Kings Landing, but what would you do? You know Cersei won’t go down without a fight and she has already taken the last two things Dany has had steady in her life her best friend and ally Missandei and her child Rhaegal. Now burning a city to the ground with innocent people is out of character for Dany and I think that is what was so shocking with the that episode.

I believe Daenerys Targaryen, Mother of dragons didn’t deserve the death she got it was a rushed storyline from the writers of Games of Thrones. Daenerys was a conqueror and she conquered the world and she fought against some evil people and prevailed. So, having her so called “lover” stab her as she is about to sit upon the Iron Throne was a destruction of the powerful character she really was. The writers of Games of Thrones really built the ideas of Dany being this entity that can’t be destroyed yet they break her in 2 episodes. Why? You may ask, maybe it was because they were ready to end the series or just got lazy in the way they ended it.

  1. It’s the truth! The season was rushed into a conclusion and for that reason, Dany’s arch got pushed along. I needed Dany and Cercei to have a confrontation of some sort, but that scene was taken from us. The two worlds needed to collide and as viewers, we felt like they were always destined to. The romance between Dany and Jon felt ultimately forced to me. It made it even worse that she was hurt by his eventual loss of interest. Like, Jon is amazing, but Dany never cared about love. It always seemed to get in her way. BTW you are soooo right about Dany’s love for Missandei. I would argue that their relationship should have been a bigger deal than it was portrayed. I was comfortable with Dany’s death, but I don’t see the poetic component of Jon doing the deed. It seemed like the end had nothing to do with the beginning of the show and I’m not really into that.

  2. I share your frustration from not seeing Daenerys obtain what she so hardly fought for during all 8 seasons. Dany was in fact quite a powerful character like you said, physically thanks to her dragons but also mentally because of all the situations she went through in order to obtain her power. We watched her growth throughout the seasons, she grew as a person, as a mother of dragons, and ultimately as a queen. Daenerys acquired power little by little facing many challenging life threatening situations. Slowly but surely, she was able to put together the largest army the world had seen, took it across the sea, defeated the night king and then defeated Cersei, Oh and did I forget to mention she was a Targaryen as well? She definitely deserved to sit on the Iron Throne, Dany did in fact deserved better.

  3. When reading your post, it took me back to when I finished the entire Game of Throne series. I was just as confused as you were when they destroyed so many character arcs, and ruined what was a fantastic series. I think that Dany was very rushed in the last season because her character had made decisions that the previous season Dany wouldn't have made. For example, once King's Landing had already been taken, there was no need for Dany to fly around on her dragon and burn the city. That episode in particular really confused and ultimately led me to believe that the series had been rushed to finish. I agree that Dany should've at least had more time to develop and not be rushed into a similar situation as her father being dubbed the "mad queen". Overall, this was a good blog post, I enjoyed reading it and seeing your ideas on the Game of Thrones realm.
